I’ve been cursing the Jag this whole time for the doors not lining up properly and the resulting wind noise. I’ve been putting off and putting off removing the door panels and spending a few hours with a jack and a bunch of extensions and shims adjusting the stupid hinges. It wasn’t that hard. It was 5 minutes with a torx bit. The bit that the latch grabs on to is held in place by a sandwich allowing it to be positioned in the door opening. Over time the bolts that held that bit in position had loosened and it had moved outboard. Loosen bolts (that were already barely finger tight), move latch in, tighten down, door lines up now. Goddammit. Before:

And here’s what was wrong with my distributor.

Kinja'd!!!

mmmmmm, crusty 40 year old GM wiring. I already ordered a new wiring harness. I also put in a new coil.

Shiny! Made an XK friend at lunch.

I also got my service manual. This thing is awesome, just look.

Kinja'd!!!

AAAAHHHH SO DETAILED! And it has all the info for my oddly obscure Pre-HE model!

A re-aligned door feels so good . It took me a few days to get used to not having to slam mine anymore haha.

And that dizzy wire: yikes!

Old wiring sucks so much that I replaced all of it in my 45 year old Camaro rather than trying to deal with it. Not only does it get brittle but previous owners can do really stupid shit to it.

Good call on the coil.

Torx bits - the official head type of “ugh back to the toolbox I guess”

Took my XJ6 to a new shop yesterday. I’m thrilled. He fixed my noisy loose timing chain, tappet guides and power steering all in one day and at what I thought was a very reasonable price.

I love torx bits. They don’t cam out and the bit doesn’t slip easily and they can flush mount. Glorious.

That’s really the only benefit I see out of a torx bit is its inability to cam out.

What I take an issue with is how infrequently a torx bit appears, so you think you’re good, get a decent way through something and you’re on a roll, and then suddenly you find yourself staring at a torx bit - bonus points if it’s bigger or smaller than the one you already pulled out. It’s like the engineers wanted to tell you how much they hate you tearing your own car apart.

Only problem is it wouldn’t start when I went to pick it up. Might have been the ultra damp rainy weather.
